Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, the prolific child rapist, had a long relationship stretching back to the late 1980s or early 1990s. In 1992, video footage shows the two at a party at Mar-a-Lago, chatting and pointing out women to each other. Trump once described Epstein as a “terrific guy” in a 2002 interview, saying, “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side”.
Their interactions have drawn scrutiny given Epstein’s extensive history of raping children. Mar-a-Lago was also connected to Epstein’s activities—one victim alleged that she was recruited by Ghislaine Maxwell from the club when she was underage. Maxwell recruited children for Epstein to rape and helped cover up his crimes for years as well as participating in some of the rapes.
After Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrest in July 2020, Donald Trump was asked by reporters for his thoughts. He expressed unexpected sympathy, saying, “I just wish her well, frankly.” Trump acknowledged that he had met Maxwell many times over the years. His comments were widely criticized for their tone, given the nature of the charges against Maxwell, which involved the trafficking and abuse of minors in coordination with Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein was found dead on August 10, 2019, at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York. His death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging, but many anomalies raised public skepticism:
- Two security cameras outside his cell reportedly malfunctioned.
- Guards who were supposed to check on him every 30 minutes fell asleep and falsified records.
- Epstein had attempted suicide or been attacked weeks earlier, but was removed from suicide watch just before his death.
These irregularities fed theories that powerful figures Epstein was connected with—potentially individuals implicated in his blackmail operations—wanted him silenced.
Epstein’s known association with Trump has drawn attention, especially considering:
- Epstein and Trump socialized together in the 1990s and early 2000s, and Epstein was a frequent visitor at Mar-a-Lago.
- While Trump later distanced himself, his comments following Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrest (saying, “I wish her well”) kept the speculation alive about his continued connections to Epstein’s network.
The theory that Trump might have orchestrated Epstein’s murder revolves around the idea that Epstein could have had incriminating information about Trump. Epstein’s phone book, flight logs, and rumored recordings of high-profile figures further added fuel to these claims.
Many believe that Attorney General William Barr was involved in covering up Epstein’s death. Barr’s father, Donald Barr, hired Epstein to teach at the elite Dalton School decades earlier, despite Epstein lacking formal qualifications—an odd coincidence that has drawn attention. After Epstein’s death, Barr declared himself “appalled” by the jail’s negligence but closed the investigation without uncovering foul play.
- Critics argue that Barr had both the authority and the motivation to control the narrative.
- Barr’s Justice Department oversaw the MCC facility where Epstein was held, and his assurances of a thorough investigation were met with skepticism, given his loyalty to Trump.
